One of the first geothermal power plants in the U.S.,
the Cove Fort geothermal power facility was placed in
operation in 1985. The plant previously supplied 12
megawatts to the City of Provo municipal utility. In
June 2003, Amp Resources acquired the plant, previously
named the Harry Bonnett Geothermal Generating Station,
located in Cove Fort, Utah, from the City of Provo,
Utah and the Utah Municipal Power Authority (UMPA) in
a cash transaction. Since 2003, Amp decommissioned the
existing plant, and is developing plans for a geothermal
power plant that will produce 36.6 MW with an option
to go up to 69 MW. Amp plans to drill approximately
14 new production wells that will supply the geothermal
brine necessary to produce 69 megawatts.
In December 2005, PacifiCorp provided Amp Resources
with a 20-year PPA to purchase the electricity output
from the plant. There are 3,000 contiguous acres of
leased land associated with the project. The Cove Fort
project land is classified by the U.S. Government as
a Known Geothermal Resource Area (KGRA).
The Cove Fort project was selected as part of PacifiCorp’s
Request for Proposals (RFP) 2003-B, to acquire up to
1,100 megawatts of cost effective renewable resources.
In response to the request, PacifiCorp received more
than 50 bids for some 6,000 megawatts of renewable energy
projects including wind, geothermal, hydro, solar and
biomass. PacifiCorp operates as Utah Power in Utah.
In late April 2007, Enel, through its subsidiary Enel North America, Inc., announced the
acquisition of AMP Resources, LLC (AMP) from AMP Capital Partners and a minority
investor. This acquisition includes one operating and four advanced stage
geothermal development projects expected to add approximately 150 MW of capacity
over the next four years to Enel’s North American operations, as well as access to a number of future opportunities. It includes the Cove Fort developing project.
